Poor Man’s Daughter Video-Lyrics

Poor Man’s Daughter – Buffy Saint Marie

All my life I’ve been a poor man’s daughter.
All my life I’ve had a poor girl’s hand.
‘Til the day came that I was promised
For my beauty to a rich young man.

Days they passed and nights they followed
‘Til the day came that I should go
Off in my ragged skirts for the last time
To my wedding down in Mexico.

All my life I’ve been a poor man’s daughter.
Never have I known a day of rest.
On my journey to my rich young bridegroom,
How my heart it beat within my breast.

I was born a poor man’s daughter.
I’ve been a ragamuffin all my life.
Long white dresses, lace and flowers,
Oh, I’ll be happy as a rich man’s wife.

Fast the horses raced with my carriage,
All the faster beat my heart,
To my lover and my marriage,
Then my carriage gave a lurch and stopped.

How I paced and how I waited,
How I wanted to continue on,
How I hated for to waste one hour
In that dirty little border town.

Men have said that women are fickle;
Changeable as birds in flight.
Men have said that women are fickle.
And I think perhaps that men are right.

Strong and handsome was the one who helped me
Right my carriage and get on my way.
Strong and handsome and poor the stranger
I have loved ever since that day.

I arrived at my bridegroom’s door.
I pulled his hair and I kicked his knee,
Dirtied my face and I wore no shoes.
Oh, no fine gentleman shall marry me.

Now my carriage is turned around.
On the Mexican border I’ll live my life.
I was born a poor man’s daughter.
I’ll be happy as a poor man’s wife.

Codetalkers Of The Digital Divide

Codetalkers Of The Digital Divide
(Or Why We Didn't Become "Roadkill On The Information Superhighway")

Artists in the exhibition: Alanis Obomsawin, Buffy Sainte Marie, Melanie Printup Hope, Ahasiw Maskegon Iskwew, Mike MacDonald, Jimmie Durham, Jackson 2Bears, Jennifer Wemigwans, Isuma.

This insightful project is the brain-child of Cheryl L'Hirondelle, who articulates the point of departure as follows:

As we move as quickly as bytes of information, catapulted through time and space and by the imperative of our continued survival, it is important to hit the pause button, reflect on our history and pay homage to the agency and ingenuity of Indigenous pathfinders.

Codetalkers of the Digital Divide highlights a range of media, web projects and digital artwork that reinforce and pay homage to the eloquence and adaptability of these particular Aboriginal artists, and of all Indigenous languages and worldviews. By virtue of this ingenuity, we can all be modern day code talkers bridging and championing the chasm that, at one point in recent history, was thought by some to be an unconquerable digital divide.

The exhibition is a timely contextualization of what Aboriginal New Media practices were, pre-Internet, and to what they have become in the current web 2.0 paradigm and how this technology has been used to continue to tell Indigenous stories, old and new.

Codetalkers was originally commissioned by imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, an international Toronto-based festival for their 10th anniversary and is the first of three exhibitions curated by former Saskatchewan-based award winning new media artist and singer/songwriter Cheryl L'Hirondelle.

''Old Man's Lament'' Video - Lyrics

One mornin' out walking
Out grovin' and ramblin
Down by the cold river, I joggled along
I heard an old man making sad lamentation
About rocking the cradle and a child not his own

Lie there, my laddy
Lie easy, lie easy
Perhaps your own daddy might never be own
And it's weary I am with weeping and sobbing
And rocking a cradle and a child not my own

I'm sorry, my neighbors..
I've married this fair one
She favors the neighbors
And none of her own
She goes out every night
Goes to bars, goes to parties
Leaves me rocking the cradle
And it's none of my own..

Hi there, my laddy..
Lie easy, lie easy
Perhaps your own daddy might never be known
And it's weary I am with weeping and sobbing
And rocking the cradle,
And it's none of my own

So come all ye young men
Who want to get married
Take my advice,
"Leave the womens alone"
For it's by the lord
If ever ye marry
She'll leave you rocking the cradle
And it's none of your own!

Festival celebrates aboriginal culture

Under a cloudless blue summer sky, hundreds of Calgarians gathered at Shaw Millenium Park on June 25 to experience firsthand a vibrant display of aboriginal culture.

Typically, National Aboriginal Day is celebrated across the country on the summer solstice, a traditional day of significance to the aboriginal people.

Calgary, however, is the only city to dedicate an entire week to honouring and showcasing aboriginal culture.

The week of celebrations at various venues throughout the city kicked off with a gala on June 21 featuring Buffy Sainte-Marie.

The theme of the week was Power of Youth, Wisdom of Elders, culminating in the Aboriginal Family Day Event which brought together families, friends, nations, agencies, elders and youth.

Suffer the Little Children - Video Lyrics

Suffer the Little Children

School bell go "Ding! Dong! Ding!"
The children all line up
They do what they are told
Take a little drink from the liar's cup

Mama don't really care
If what they learn is true
Or if it's only lies
Just get them through the factories
Into production
Ah, get them into line

Late in the afternoon
The children all come home
They mind their manners well
Their little lives are all laid out

Mama don't seem to care
If she may break their hearts
She clips their wings off, they never learn to fly
Poor Mama needs a source of pride
A doctor son she'll have
No what the cost to manhood or to soul

Sun shine down, brightly shine
Down on all the land
Shine down on the newborn lambs
A butcher's knife is in his hand

Mama, she keeps them unprepared
To meet the enemy
That's comin' unto us
Teach them that evil dwells across the sea
Lives in a mountain
Like they see on TV

Down in the heart of town
The Devil dresses up
He keeps his nails clean
Did you think he'd be a boogeyman?

Oh, Mama's stuck with sagging dreams
She'll sell a son or two into some slavery
That's lucrative and fine
Just teach them not to criticize
Say "Yes" to bosses, impress the clients
Ah teachers of the world teach them to fake it well

School bell go "Ding! Dong! Ding!"
The children all line up
They do what they are told
Take a little drink from the liar's cup

"Timeless Love" Video- Lyrics

Tender Love
Joyful Love
Gentle love
Wonderous love
Love divine
You're one half angel
One half mine
Softess love
Strongest love
Strangest love
Youngest love
Endless love
Love divine!
You're one half angel
And you're one half mine
Furious love
Precious love
Sureous love
Blessed love
How can love shine so bright
How can love be so right
Timeless love
Tender love
Joyful love
Gentle love
Wonderous love
Love divine
You're one half angel
And you're on half mine
Timeless love
Tender love
Joyful love
Gentle love
Wonderous love
Love divine
You're one half angel
And you're one half mine

Calgary Folk Music Festival - Review

This is a review of Calgary Folk Music Festival by The Calgary Herald:
As 2011's Calgary Folk Music Festival rolled to a close Sunday night after a full day of sunshine, it was before a sold-out crowd of roughly 13,000 gently swaying to the agreeable strains of that sturdy Canuck institution, Blue Rodeo.

At 70, Buffy Sainte-Marie certainly has the right to rest on her laurels as a performer. But if the Cree native was supposed to keep her Sunday set mellow, she apparently did not get the memo. An expert at mixing strains of native language and music with popular music, she was in fine form and voice Sunday night. By the time she and her band danced offstage to powerful Powwow strains, she had earned her standing ovation.

Now that the buffalo's gone (Lyrics- Video)

Can you remember the times
That you have held your head high
and told all your friends of your Indian claim
Proud good lady and proud good man
Some great great grandfather from Indian blood came
and you feel in your heart for these ones

Oh it's written in books and in song
that we've been mistreated and wronged
Well over and over I hear those same words
from you good lady and you good man
Well listen to me if you care where we stand
and you feel you're a part of these ones

When a war between nations is lost
the loser we know pays the cost
but even when Germany fell to your hands
consider dear lady, consider dear man
you left them their pride and you left them their land
and what have you done to these ones

Has a change come about my dear man
or are you still taking our lands
A treaty forever your senators sign
They do dear lady, they do dear man
and the treaties are broken again and again
and what will you do for these ones

Oh it's all in the past you can say
but it's still going on here today
The governments now want the Navaho land
that of the Inuit and the Cheyenne
It's here and it's now you can help us dear man
Now that the buffalo's gone.

Cripple Creek Lyrics - Video

Hey, I got a girl at the head of the creek
Goin up to see her about 2 times a week
Kiss her on the mouth, sweet as any wine
Wrap herself around me like a sweet potato vine

Goin up Cripple Creek, goin on a run
Goin up Cripple Creek to have a little fun
Goin up Cripple Creek, goin in a whirl
Goin up Cripple Creek to see my little girl

Now the girls up Cripple Creek about half-grown
Jump on a boy like a dog on a bone
Roll my britches up to my knees
Wade ol Cripple Creek whenever I please

Goin up Cripple Creek, goin on a run
Goin up Cripple Creek to have a little fun
Goin up Cripple Creek, goin in a whirl
Goin up Cripple Creek to see my little girl
Lyrics www.allthelyrics.com/lyrics/buffy_saintemarie/

Now, Cripple Creek's wide and Cripple Creek's deep
Wade old Cripple Creek before I sleep
Hills are steep and the roads are muddy
and I'm so dizzy that I can't stand steady I'm

Goin up Cripple Creek, goin on a run
Goin up Cripple Creek to have a little fun
Goin up Cripple Creek, goin in a whirl
Goin up Cripple Creek to see my little girl.

Cornbury Festival, Oxfordshire - Review

The Cornbury Festival is an English summer fete writ large. Primary schools fundraise by baking cakes, mini-Boden-clad children scamper with candyfloss. A nice military type is entertaining the crowds with songs on the piano: it’s James Blunt. Off-duty Morris dancers break into a frenzy of hanky-waving to Bellowhead’s brassy bawdry. A woman is singing “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” but she is the real Cindi Lauper. The Dire Straits tribute band boasts multiple former Straits members. The Madness tribute act is Olly Murs – theX-Factor also-ran, as a button and a festival headliner in embryo.

Less often seen at summer fetes is a 70-year-old Red Indian (her term) in a heavily studded leather jacket, tearing at ear-splitting volume through five decades of music. Buffy Sainte-Marie’s band of much younger Manitoban musicians revelled in the changes. A headdress was tipped to Elvis in the breakneck rockabilly of “Blue Sunday”, all “Since My Baby Left Me” and “Saturday Night Ain’t Nothing to Me”. And Broadway collided head-on with country and western on “He’s an Indian Cowboy in the Rodeo”.

Although Sainte-Marie was a smiling presence, the songs burned with anger. Once she dispatched the schmaltzy “Up Where We Belong”, her Oscar-winning song, in a reading pitched halfway between Jennifer Warnes and Joe Cocker, the material darkened into punk aggression. On “No No Keshagesh” she scolded rapacious corporations. “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee” was an account of miscarriages of justice and the persecution of the American Indian Movement, the reggae rumble of the verses kicking up into a defiant chorus.

Video : Vancouver Community College - Year of Science

The Year of Science is providing a total of $227,800 in funding to raise awareness of the importance of science in B.C. and to generate interest in the many career opportunities in science-related fields across the province, Ida Chong, Minister of Science and Universities, announced today.

The funding will be provided as two grants; one in the amount of $127,800 to the Vancouver Community College (VCC) and $100,000 to the association of Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of B.C. (ASTTBC).

“Both these organizations will help further the Year of Science objective to raise the level of science awareness, and science and technology skills in British Columbia,” said Chong. “With the support of science leaders and educators throughout B.C., our government is promoting increased literacy in science so we will be well-positioned to meet future workforce demands.”

As a major provider of post-secondary training in B.C., VCC is playing a leading and innovative role in addressing future labour market needs in the many sectors of our economy dependent on high level applied and academic science.

“We are pleased that this Year of Science funding will allow us to continue our highly successful speaker series, presenting B.C. and international scientists who have impressed audiences with the wonder, awe and discovery of science,” said Kathy Kinloch, president, Vancouver Community College. “It’s exciting to be able to showcase science and scientists through these events – inspiring British Columbians and helping foster a culture of exploration, research and innovation.”

One of the spring highlights of the speaker series will be Buffy Sainte Marie, Native American international activist pop star, who will provide a perspective of science through Native American Eyes. British Columbians and guest presenters from around the globe will take part in the dialogue via the web.

Also receiving funding is ASTTBC, the professional registration body for 9,500 technologists, technicians and technical specialists in applied science and engineering technologies. ASTTBC will use its funding to work with its network of technology professionals to identify and co-ordinate job shadowing and work experience opportunities in applied science fields. The main centres for placement include Kelowna, Kamloops, Prince George, Prince Rupert, Castlegar, Trail, Nanaimo, Campbell River, Fort St. John and Metro Vancouver.

“B.C. needs more scientists, technologists, technicians and engineers to remain competitive in the global economy,” said John Leech, executive director of the ASTTBC. “With the funding from the Year of Science, ASTTBC will introduce grade 11 and 12 students to a variety of technology fields, to encourage them to pursue science-based careers.”

The Year of Science is in direct response to the need to strengthen and foster a culture of science in British Columbia. Over the next 10 years, approximately one in every eight job openings will be in a science-related occupation.
