100% real and honest...
In my American Studies high school class, my students read several pieces that explored a similar theme: "Chee's Daughter" by Juanita Platero and Siyowin Miller, "Lullaby" by Leslie Silko, and "Remarks on the Natives of North America" by Ben Franklin along with several chapters from Dee Brown's great Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.
We explored the sources of negative stereotype in the media with Mark Twain's essay on Cooper's novels, a radio episode of The Lone Ranger called "The Iron Horse," and two songs from the fifties, Faron Young's "Yellow Bandana" and Rex Allen's "Son, Don't Go Near the Indians."
The unit was completed with my performance of Danny O'Keefe's "Chief Joseph," Joe Ely's "Indian Cowboy," Peter La Farge's "Ballad of Ira Hayes," and Buffy's own recordings of the brilliant and powerful "Now That the Buffalo's Gone," "My Country 'Tis of thy People You're Dying," and "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee." Having retired this year, after forty years of teaching, I don't miss much, but I do miss those units that allowed students to encounter ideas and experiences that the "test driven curriculum" has attempted to purge from our schools.
