Under a cloudless blue summer sky, hundreds of Calgarians gathered at Shaw Millenium Park on June 25 to experience firsthand a vibrant display of aboriginal culture.
Typically, National Aboriginal Day is celebrated across the country on the summer solstice, a traditional day of significance to the aboriginal people.
Calgary, however, is the only city to dedicate an entire week to honouring and showcasing aboriginal culture.
The week of celebrations at various venues throughout the city kicked off with a gala on June 21 featuring Buffy Sainte-Marie.
The theme of the week was Power of Youth, Wisdom of Elders, culminating in the Aboriginal Family Day Event which brought together families, friends, nations, agencies, elders and youth.
