Sainte-Marie art exhibit opens at Wanuskewin

Aboriginal culture meets digital technology in an art exhibit by Buffy Sainte-Marie, opening near Saskatoon at Wanuskewin Heritage Park.

Sainte-Marie is the Saskatchewan-born Cree who went on to international fame as a musician and creative innovator.

The exhibit Sixteen Million Colours features eleven of her works created with digital and photographic technology -- using pixels the way impressionist painters use dots of paint.

“That’s why she called this show Sixteen Million Colours,” said guest curator and art historian Mary Longman. “It’s about 24 bits per pixel so you have a palette of over sixteen million colours. And that’s why these works here are just really vibrant.”

The collection is an array of large-scale images, from warriors and hula dancers to self-portraits.

Organizers are planning to have Sainte-Marie visit in the fall. The exhibit runs to November.
